Today, we went for a lovely drive to Bathurst to buy hay for the horses. Although the horses eat grass all day, apparently they still also need to eat dried grass! We don’t know why they can’t eat our food. On the weekend, our humans have to go to at least four different shops to buy everyone’s food. It seems very strange that they can’t sell everything in the one shop or that we can’t all just eat the same thing – we would happily eat most of the human food (but not the green things).
We had a lovely drive and went straight to the first hay shed with only one stop. We only had one stop as our female human was in the car, and she wouldn’t let the male human stop for any more snacks – he would normally stop more than once.
The first hay shed was amazing, we saw our first sheep and got to smell some of their poo. We also met a border collie who was pretty excitable and very pleased to see us. The humans there were huge, the biggest we have ever seen. They were very good at lifting hay and in no time, our trailer had lots of hay bales in it.
Next stop was a snack in the township of Bathurst. We found a lovely cafe with outside seating called the Country Coffee – I think because we were in the country. We immediately felt at home as the human there bought us water straight away, and asked our humans if we could have a sausage! Can you believe our luck! The sausage was fantastic and I would highly recommend this as a dog friendly destination. Our humans also ate all their food, and commented that it was one of the best coffees they’d had in ages.
One interesting observation is that all the dogs in Bathurst travelled in the tray of their human’s utes instead of inside like us. It must be quite windy and firm, and difficult to control the temperature to a comfortable level. We are very pleased that we get to ride inside, and sleep on the cushioned back seat with the cool air blowing softly from the holes in front of us.
Next stop was another hay shed, and this time with a very noisy kelpy. We mostly stayed in the car here as it was too tempting to bark back and our humans wanted to make a good impression. Apparently the hay at this place was quite good! We are not sure if what we saw was correct, but we think that maybe this kelpy had a kennel outside. It looked quite rustic….we are glad that we get to sleep in the house with the humans with a selection of couches, and when it gets really cold, we hop on the bed with the humans to share our body heat. We don’t think we would like sleeping outside.
We would recommend Bathurst as a good destination for a day trip for a City dog – there is lots to smell, the people seem very nice, and we were very happy with the Country Cafe. It is also interesting to see how the country dogs live.

Fergie the Country Dog.
Scoot & Brytes you and your human family had a nice drive in the country today to Bathurst it sounds like it certainly opened your eyes to see how us country dogs live. It’s totally different to your way of life. I don’t mean to be rude but to me as I’m a farm dog that lives in town you two sound like a pair of softies compared to us country families each to there own way. There are a lot of families living like you two in the country as well were all good friends.
I should introduce myself I’m a kelpie my name is Fergie and live in a small country town my human is very kind and caring to me. I had a difficult childhood due to frequent major eye problems. My human done everything possible to help my eye he took me frequently to the Vet for a long time. It was a sad day when my human & I were told there were no other options available I had to have my eye removed.
My human was very sad he had lovingly cared for me during my eye problem for several years, that was years ago I cope well with one eye I’m fine now.
My favorite town yard game is Throw Ball I throw a tennis ball in the air from my mouth and run after it I used to be able to catch it again in the air now I run after it then throw it again it’s fun.
I was taught when I was little it’s not polite to bark in our town yard, I’m allowed to bark when visiting human family at there farm I bark and run after flying birds.
I enjoy traveling on the back of the ute leaning so my head is just over the side so I can feel the full force of the country fresh air blowing in my face and ears even on a cold frosty morning it’s an unbelievable feeling us country farm dogs enjoy it. I have a safety lead clipped on me to keep me safe when traveling in the back of the ute it’s just long enough allowing my head to reach the side of the ute. My human and I drive to visit family on the farm several times a week my human knows I love to run he stops his ute when we turn off the tar road onto the dirt lane he unclips my safety clip I jump off running at top speed.
He drives his ute just behind me I run several kilometers when I feel I’ve ran enough I stop look at my human he knows I’m ready to jump on the back of the ute again. I don’t need my safety clip on for the short drive to the family farm I always feel excited to going to play with my farm dog friends.
Occasionally I help muster sheep with my human plus work in the sheep yards, I enjoy working with sheep it makes me feel useful helping my human family.
I have new little dog friend at the farm he is 6 months old now a Jack Russell his human family adopted him the two human little boys named him Chase. We are good playmates Chase is rough for a little bloke his human visit our home frequently especially when the two little boys are home staying with my human it’s great they bring Chase to visit me and we play in my backyard.
I have a cosy bed in my humans big shed in town it’s warm in winter, in the summer I can please myself where I sleep as I have an outside bed as well. I don’t go inside my humans house that is there private area. I have a mat just outside there big Living Room window I usually lie there as my humans favorite chair is just inside the window I’m near him i can watch TV if I want to through the window, usually I just sleep on the mat.
I have a happy life living with my human and his wife they are both very caring I get to travel to the farm frequently from my safe enclosed safe yard in town so I have the best of both worlds.
